5,0 sur 5 étoiles "The Crow" on 4K - A must-own disc for fans and physical media collectors!
Commenté aux États-Unis le 8 mai 2024
It's utterly insane to think that "The Crow," one of the definitive movies of the 90s, is thirty years old this year. I remember being a child when it came out and hearing all about it, and eventually stumbling onto it and becoming a fan when I was a teenager in the early 2000s. It's one of those films that really needs to introduction.

The late Brandon Lee stars as Eric Draven, a rock musician who was murdered along with his wife-to-be Shelly one year ago. When a mystical crow brings Eric back to life and imbues him with superhuman abilities, he sets off on an odyssey of revenge and redemption, seeking to put the wrong things right bring justice to the men responsible for his murder...

Directed by Alex Proyas, the film largely succeeds thanks to the remarkable performances and exquisitely stylized presentation. The movie's visuals are a celebration of grunge and goth, and its hauntingly mournful tone sets a beautiful mood. And there isn't enough that can be said for Lee, who I firmly believe would have become a superstar had he not tragically been killed during production. Special props also go to the excellent Ernie Hudson, a criminally underrated Michael Wincott and the excellent child-actress Rochelle Davis.

I sat down and watched this wonderful new 4K release earlier tonight, and I have to say... if you're a fan or a physical media collector with a 4K set-up, this is absolutely a must-have disc!

The 4K presentation is excellent all around, and this is easily the best I've seen the film look on a home-video release-- and that's saying a lot, because I felt the 2011 Blu-Ray was quite good. Picture quality here is near crystal-clear, with subtle increases in detail from start to finish. Things like the textures of the wardrobe are more noticeable, and many of the sweeping shots of the city (accomplished with miniature photography) look significantly sharper. The film also maintains a nice level of grain throughout the runtime, with no noticeable noise reduction... and thank god, because the graininess adds a lot to the presentation.

Additionally, I adored the color of this release. The film is already quite dark visually, and I was worried since 4K discs can sometimes play up black levels too much. But this 4K wisely pumps the breaks and only lightly tweaks things like the contrast and black levels, creating a very nice balance. This is what I'd call a pretty ideal 4K remaster and release... it gives us the film we love as we remember it, but just a little better all around.

I haven't been able to check out the new bonus features yet, though from what I understand there is roughly 40 minutes of new content, in addition to what was included in previous releases. So far as I can tell, everything that was on the previous DVD and Blu-Rays is here.

All in all, I give this release the highest of recommendations. This is one of those discs that I firmly think everyone should have in their collection. It's a great film given an excellent presentation.
